The Changing Landscape for Location Photography

Sophie Hitchens Monday 22nd June 2020

With every industry affected by the Covid 19 pandemic in different and evolving ways, the location photography industry is no exception.

The initial response with the need for all of us to do the right thing was a total shut down of location shoots for more than 8 weeks. Now, as lockdown begins to lift, the gentle opening of the photographic industry is taking place, but there are changes. With guidelines in place everyone involved in shoots wants and needs to return to safe working environments, but what will this look and feel like?

For clients, the choice of location may change with a preference for outdoor spaces, empty properties, or those that can easily be adapted to allow owners to isolate themselves from shoots. Shoot crews will reduce in size to allow for social distancing, staggered arrival times will become routine, hygiene measures will ramp up and catering options will change.

For location owners, the emphasis will be on clean and ventilated environments and minimal contact with shoot crews. Many of our Light Locations already provide great outdoor spaces, stunning empty interiors or ones that can be easily adapted to allow owners and shoot crews to minimise contact. For those properties that can make changes to offer increased separation between shoot areas or open up new and more isolated areas of their properties.

For us, at Light Locations, we will be working closely with both clients and location owners to ensure the industry creatively develops to cope with the changing landscape. We are excited and confident that lessons already being learnt in this gentle phase back period will create a better, stronger and even more exciting industry to be part of.
