Craig Fordham is a fashion photographer who specialises in creating story-led imagery, bringing enigmatic narratives together through his work. His creative eye has led him to work with highly regarded clients such as Burberry, Lacoste and Selfridges.
We caught up with Craig to chat about his early career, how he got into the fashion industry and what he gets up to when he’s not shooting.
Can you describe yourself in three words?
Unlikely fashion photographer.
How would you describe your photographic style?
Quiet, understated, narrative.
Where do you find most of your inspiration comes from?
Locations, films, books and music.
Do you prefer shooting on film or digital?
Film 100%. It’s kinder to people and there’s more of a connection with the subject. It’s also nice being more considered with each frame.
How did you begin your journey into photography?
Loving the photographs in music papers at the time, such as N M E, with great photographers like Anton Corbijn, made me pick up a camera.
What attracted you to the fashion industry?
I tried every type of photography at college, it’s just my lecturers thought my people pictures best, so fashion was the most obvious course. Love all photography but do really enjoy meeting and photographing people.
What clients do you now work with the most?
There’s a few clothing companies I work with, the printed medium is so depleted now but I still shoot personal work most weeks.
What’s your favourite subject to shoot?
Haven’t a favourite subject, enjoy photographing anything and everything.
How does the location influence the outcome of your shoots?
Massively, the location sets the mood and tone for the story, I rarely use light so the location is so important to me.
Can you tell us a bit more about your studio space?
My studio was a lockdown project I built with my brother in law, it’s small (permitted build) but I think I got the lighting right, helps me keep shooting on the bleak winter days.
If you weren’t a photographer, what would you be doing?
I hate to think but always fancied sign writing and a crack at stonemasonry.
How do you unwind at the end of a busy day?
Still play seven a side football, that’s my best stress relief.
What’s your favourite movie and why?
Hard to say one, love “The Last Picture Shot” made in 1917 but shot in black and white. Love the photography, the music, actors and story.
How would you describe where you live?
I live in Harlow, Essex so bland and busy, with easy access to London and full of people with good hearts.
What goals do you have for the future?
Still many things I’d like to photograph but would also like to print up my best work and put it all together in some form or other. If there was a strong enough point of view there perhaps a book.
