With a quick, cold snap September reminds us that Summer is saying farewell. Although darker mornings and frostier temperatures may be on the horizon, Autumn can also be a time of vibrant natural colour and misty afternoons spent exploring the wilderness. For photoshoots, this might mean venturing a little further afield to bring new stories and visions to life. We’ve put together a list of some of our favourite outdoor huts, vans and cabins that carry a distinctive seasonal look and a hint of location magic.
Drift End is a rural farm house in Suffolk surrounded by meadows and woodlands as far as the eye can see. The property has a multitude of outbuildings to choose from, including two shepherd huts tucked away behind layers of leaves. Each hut is more charming than the last, be it the pumpkin orange painted sills on the wooden shed, or the tiny window panes tucked beneath arched ceilings. The whitewashed interiors are also striking, each filled with rustic props and earthy foraged items like gnarled branches or bundles of straw.
Nestled in the sunkissed fields of Ross-on-Wye lies Vintage Vans, a complex of four retro caravans and a kitchen and washing hut. Each caravan has been lovingly restored, with unique interiors that feel like a step back in time. The attention to detail is simply wonderful, from the floral teacups and curtains within to the glistening green exteriors that reflect the stunning landscape beyond.
The abundant character of Spring Cottage is clear as soon as one steps over it’s Cotswold Stone threshold; inside lies a treasure trove of charming props from a bygone era. Through its lively wildflower garden lie even more delights – a few quirky outbuildings including a classic greenhouse and a shepherds hut.
The interiors of these spaces are equally lovely, boasting a palette of mossy greens and warm woods decorated with even more fascinating bits and bobs. They carry a sense of the collector or the crafter, with each item feeling handmade and tactile evoking visions of a dusky evening spent tinkering away at the bottom of the garden.
For an even more escapist spot, look no further than The Cabin in Reading. This rustic log hut lies in a secluded spot surrounded by forestry, with its own private parking and outdoor eating area. It’s a cinematic sight, such an unassuming structure tucked away beneath the canopies, surely a tiny glowing smudge on the landscape after twilight has fallen. Inside the cabin the interior is light and understated, with a classic log burner and cosy blankets at the ready for simple nights beneath the stars.
Foster House is a New England style property located in Kent surrounded by three acres of grounds. Past its wildflower meadow lies a cabin, vintage caravan and airstream all awaiting their moment in the limelight. The theme of crisp whites carried through the main house is continued through the other areas, creating light-filled spaces ready to shoot.
The hut is no exception, with wide double doors to let even more light in – or spread out into the gardens. The space is large and versatile, filled with woody textures and tones. Inside, the log burner and wood pile lie ready and waiting to become a crackling fire, glowing with golden embers.
