The Magic and Light of Beautiful Windows

Tabitha Paradise Tuesday 19th November 2024

It’s always been said that the eyes are the windows to the soul, could it be that windows are the eyes to the facade of a house? It’s true they allow us a glimpse within, however they seem more akin to the heartbeat of a home, transforming a space with ever-changing glimmers of tumbling sunlight and creating both atmosphere and character. For a shoot location windows are of paramount importance, with their positioning, size and style all being factors that photographers and art directors alike must take into consideration. From contemporary picture windows to ornately carved period features, each and every location house has a unique kind of magic within its panes.

Classic windows

Timeless Classics

Favoured for its iconic distressed walls, Eagle House is a stunning Georgian property located in Bath. Its huge sash windows pour soft light onto the pastel blue plaster, beautifully framed by classic panelling each side. Throughout the location’s sprawling footprint lay a vast collection of other stunning designs, with tall arching windows framing stairways and creating a sense of elegance and grand scale.

Yeabridge House brings a bolder look to its windows, with the surrounding panelling painted in a rich deep blue. This contrast highlights the amazingly wide windows as the stunning feature they are, drenching the snooker table and original wooden floors in daylight. This tonal highlight is echoed through the doorways and woodwork of the ground floor, leading you through each room with a steady, stylish hand.

Being a Georgian property too, Evering Road also houses tall and elegant panelled panes in crisp white. These windows are contrasted however by curved and contemporary furnishings accented with pops of fresh colour. It just shows how timeless this style of window really is, equally beautiful when surrounded by modern design as it is when framed by the faded grandeur of a time since past.

Crittall windows

The Craftsmanship of Crittall

Much adored for their high quality craftsmanship and effortless style, the Crittall window proves ever popular time and time again. It’s no surprise then that some of our most in demand locations are those with big and beautiful Crittall frames in place. A prime example is Anders House, a double fronted Victorian townhouse that opens up to a wall of light at its rear. The effect is simply stunning, bringing the natural world into the space whilst sweeping it with daylight.

The Gatehouse is another property littered with lovely Crittall windows, featuring a wall beside it’s kitchen similar to that of Anders House, as well as a skylight and several smaller instalments. The piece de resistance is surely the dining room window, which not only towers high into the vaulted ceiling but has a unique arched top, casting a rounded glow onto the soft peach plaster walls.

Rustic and Rugged

On the more traditional side, wood and timber panes add glorious texture to scenes and can be composed into vintage photo frames in which to spotlight beautiful products. Nestled amongst a sea of trees, the aptly named Forest House brings endless charm and character through its panelled walls and boarded floors. Its large open plan space has numerous bays of rustic windows, perfect for framing models or gorgeous products. Nature lies in perfect view at every turn, evoking thoughts of a simple life amongst the pines.

Rustic windows

The rural farmhouse Drift End is awash with textures and natural tones too, and its wide kitchen windows cast light to every corner. In addition, each one of its numerous outbuildings houses a new space, each more interesting than the last, with more textured timber panes looking out into the surrounding woodland.

A Contemporary Touch

Often synonymous with minimalist, contemporary windows tend to bear simpler frames and large expanses of uninterrupted glass. Windsor Road characterises this look completely, with vast walls of sliding glass doors, carefully placed picture windows and dramatic skylights. As a result, the space is flooded with light, illuminating the clean lines of the architecture and soft shades of stonework throughout.

At Leytonstone House, the sweeping windows are similar in scale but instead are framed in an Oak finish, creating a softer and more neutral palette. This is further complemented by the warm touches of wood in the ceiling rafters as well as the carefully selected vintage wooden pieces. Although it looks clean and modern at the back, the location is actually a Victorian townhouse, and features a stunning panelled bay window complete with wooden knots and lines. This location is truly a celebration of old and new, encapsulating the variety and charm that unique windows can bring to a space.
